Ampacimon at CIRED 2025: Sharing practical insights on grid monitoring and optimization

Ampacimon is pleased to participate in CIRED 2025, where we’ll be presenting two contributions grounded in real-world experience and collaboration with utilities. Our focus this year is on how data-driven tools are being applied in the field to improve grid reliability, efficiency, and planning.

Applying Dynamic Line Rating in real-world operations

Dynamic Line Rating (DLR) is increasingly recognized as a valuable tool for optimizing the use of existing grid infrastructure. By using real-time weather and line data, DLR allows operators to adjust line ratings dynamically—unlocking additional capacity while maintaining safety.

Our paper presents a series of case studies from both the U.S. and Europe, covering a range of climates and grid configurations. We explore how DLR has been integrated into Energy Management Systems (EMS) and operational processes, and what utilities have learned along the way. The results show clear benefits—such as increased line capacity, reduced congestion, and deferred capital investments—while also highlighting key challenges like sensor deployment, data accuracy, and forecasting reliability.

This work reflects the growing maturity of DLR as a practical tool, and the importance of aligning technology, operations, and planning to fully realize its value.

Field experience in PD detection with smart sensors and AI

In collaboration with EDP Redes España, we will also share our experience developing and deploying a smart sensor system for Partial Discharge (PD) detection in the distribution grid. Building on more than a decade of PD monitoring, this project focuses on moving from periodic manual inspections to continuous, automated monitoring.

The system uses AI to detect and locate PD defects in real time, helping utilities anticipate insulation failures and shift toward predictive maintenance. We discuss the technical requirements—such as sensor sensitivity, data communication, and model accuracy—as well as field validation results comparing the system’s performance to expert manual diagnosis.

This approach supports safer, more efficient asset management, and demonstrates how AI and smart sensing can be applied in a targeted, cost-effective way.

Supporting smarter grid operations

Both contributions reflect Ampacimon’s ongoing work to support utilities with practical, field-tested solutions. Whether it’s optimizing line capacity or improving asset monitoring, our goal is to help operators make better decisions using real-time data and proven methods.
