Ampacimon, a world leader in Dynamic Line Rating (DLR) technology, has installed a sensor on a live 220 kV powerline with a drone.
Ampacimon, a world leader in Dynamic Line Rating (DLR) technology has installed a DLR sensor on a live 220 kV power line. DLR allows power utilities to increase the power capacity of power lines by up to 40% when weather effects like wind, ambient temperature and loss of solar heat cool the line. Ampacimon has produced DLR sensors since 2010 and has many customers globally, however the installation of sensors has been time consuming due to long outage lead time or requiring specialized live-line skills.
Ampacimon has created a sensor and drone capable of mounting a sensor in under 90 seconds! This greatly reduces the cost of installation and speed at which it can be done, empowering quick and cost-effective solutions for enabling capacity.
With transmission system operators facing the growing challenges of a changing electricity system the heat is on to find smarter ways of operating their grid assets. A key breakthrough is the use of real time data to optimise transmission capacity and make big savings for even the smallest cooperatives and their customers.
